New institution is a major philanthropic contribution to advancing science
The Palace of Science, the first scientific hub of its kind in Serbia, formally opened at Kralja Milana 11 in Belgrade. The 25-million-euro project was completed by the Miodrag Kostić Foundation, turning the 5,500 sqm space into a multifunctional center dedicated to science.
The permanent collection at the Palace of Science comprises more than 30 interesting and innovative interactive exhibits that showcase scientific phenomena and discoveries in areas such as the human body, Earth, technology, and outer space. Visitors will be able to explore Europe’s largest interactive globe, with a diameter of three meters, the first visiting exhibition on sharks, newly arrived from the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, a planetarium equipped with a state-of-the-art audio-visual system, and virtual visits to a variety of locations using virtual reality capsules.
The center boasts amenities such as the Kids’ Science Corner, a restaurant, bookshop, and science café, where customers can choose to have their coffee served by a robot. The Palace of Science also includes an event space where the Miodrag Kostić Foundation will regularly hold panel discussions, workshops, and lectures on a variety of issues.
Apart from these exhibits and activities that aim to popularize science with the general public, and young people in particular, the Palace of Science also comprises a network of 20 science centers, 19 of which have been set up in partnership with the University of Belgrade Faculty of Electrical Engineering and one, the Digitalization Centre, a joint effort with the Serbian Broadcasting Corporation. These hubs perform research in a variety of areas, from robotics to artificial intelligence, electrical energy, biomedicine and telecommunications, to 3D sound.
“Miodrag Kostić established the Foundation that bears his name to leave something of lasting value to Serbian science and society. Although this is the crown of his philanthropic efforts, for us this opening of the Palace of Science is much more than just the formally dedication of the Foundation. This is an investment in the future, technological progress, innovation, and our talents that will be the force that powers the development of Serbia,” said Aleksandar Kostić, member of the Foundation’s Board of Directors.
The Palace of Science is open to visitors from 10 am to 6 pm Tuesday to Friday, and from 11 am to 7 pm on weekends. Tickets can be bought on site or online.
