Coca-Cola’s Water Stewardship Strategy and Program and the Conservation of Vlasina Lake’s Unique Biodiversity
On October 1st and 2nd, 2024, a visit was organized to one of Serbia’s protected areas of exceptional features—Vlasina, as part of the AmCham series “Meet the ESG Champions.” During the visit, representatives from AmCham member companies had the opportunity to learn about Coca-Cola System projects focused on nature conservation, sustainable resource management, and the further development of the Vlasina region.
Participants were introduced to Coca-Cola’s water resource management strategy and program, the certification process for the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) standard, which the “Vlasinka” water factory proudly holds, as well as ongoing preparations for adoption of a new standard ISO 46001. Coca-Cola representatives shared practicals insights from the process of obtaining these standards, providing valuable guidance on navigating the certification process, overcoming challenges, and implementing effective water management strategies.
Through the presentation of Coca-Cola’s water management strategy and program, participants discussed some of the shared water challenges and ways to joinly ensure sustainable water management.
During the visit, discussions also focused on preserving the biodiversity and unique ecosystem of Vlasina Lake, projects aimed at promoting eco-tourism and the economic sustainability of the region, as well as opportunities for future partnerships and collaboration to protect natural resources and foster the sustainable development of the local community.
The tour of the factory facility provided an opportunity to discuss the company’s broader ESG strategy, investments in infrastructure and technologies for addressing climate change, and the ways Coca-Cola implements the principles of circular economy and recycling. Additionally, the visit highlighted initiatives undertaken by the company to improve working conditions, foster employee education and development, and ensure an inclusive and safe working environment.
