The seminar “Greenwashing and the Legal Limits of Sustainability Claims” was held at the premises of AmCham, in cooperation with the law firm Schoenherr.
As sustainability becomes an integral part of business strategy, the risk of overstating or inaccurately presenting ESG achievements also increases. The seminar brought together company representatives and legal experts to shed light on the legal and reputational consequences of greenwashing — the practice of falsely or misleadingly portraying environmental responsibility.
Through concrete examples from international practice, participants gained insights into:
key concepts and the impact of greenwashing on business operations;
current legal cases illustrating regulatory and legal repercussions;
types of legal exposure companies may face, including the potential to initiate or be subject to legal proceedings due to misleading sustainability claims.
The discussion raised important questions about responsibility in communicating ESG values, as well as the fine line between marketing strategy and legally sound claims, offering clear recommendations for aligning with regulatory frameworks in the EU and beyond.
The seminar also encouraged experience-sharing among participants and opened the floor for dialogue on transparent and lawful sustainability communication practices.
