A workshop dedicated to the conservation of solitary bees and the promotion of urban biodiversity was held in AmCham’s garden. The event brought together representatives of member companies and organizations interested in sustainable practices, with the aim of highlighting the importance of these vital pollinators and encouraging practical actions for their protection.
Dr. Jovana Bila Dubaić from the Faculty of Biology presented the role of solitary bees in the ecosystem, emphasizing that they pollinate three to five times more efficiently than honeybees, contribute to plant species diversity, and ensure continuous pollination throughout different periods of the year. She also addressed the challenges these species face in urban environments, particularly habitat loss and fragmentation, as well as pollution.
In the practical part of the workshop, participants had the opportunity to build their own “bee hotels” – special nests that allow solitary bees to lay eggs and secure the continuation of their population. These bee hotels are intended to be placed in office spaces or donated to local communities, directly contributing to biodiversity preservation.
Through this initiative, AmCham aims to connect its members with environmental protection topics and provide concrete tools that can help preserve natural balance and support the sustainable development of urban areas.
